Statement by the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations on Lebanese Heritage Month in Canada

November 1, 2023 marks the beginning of the Lebanese Heritage Month in Canada. This momentous occasion was made possible through the unanimous approval of Bill S-246 in Canada's Parliament.
Mrs. Lena Metlege Diab’s, member for Halifax West, introduction of this bill and its subsequent passage into law is a remarkable achievement that underscores the invaluable contributions of Lebanese Canadians to our nation's social, economic, cultural, religious, philanthropic, and political fabric.

We are thrilled to celebrate the very first Lebanese Heritage Month, and we're honored to share the sentiments of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as he commemorates this significant occasion: "In celebrating the inaugural Lebanese Heritage Month in Canada, we recognize the profound contributions of the Lebanese-Canadian community. From business and arts to science and politics, the Lebanese-Canadian community has enriched our nation in countless ways. Our country is stronger and more vibrant thanks to your presence and contributions."

These words from the Prime Minister encapsulate the essence of this celebration. They reflect Canada's inclusivity, unity, and respect for diverse cultural backgrounds. Lebanese Heritage Month is a chance for all Canadians to explore and appreciate the unique heritage that the Lebanese community brings to our nation. From delectable cuisine to captivating arts, the Lebanese-Canadian community has left an indelible mark on the Canadian cultural landscape.

The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations is proud to be part of this commemoration. We believe in the power of cultural exchange and the strength of unity through diversity.

During this month, let's come together to share in the beauty of Lebanese culture, learn from one another, and celebrate the richness that our diversity brings. As we embark on this journey of cultural appreciation, let us honor the Lebanese-Canadian community and all the diverse communities that make our country vibrant.

As part of our November program, NCCAR will be launching a month-long online campaign highlighting 30 Lebanese-Canadian personalities who have contributed to Lebanese heritage in Canada, Lebanon and abroad. This is in cooperation with His Excellency Mr. Fadi Ziadeh and is being sponsored by the Embassy of Lebanon in Ottawa.

NCCAR is a not-for-profit charitable organization based in Ottawa, dedicated to fostering greater understanding and knowledge among Canadians about the cultural, historical, and socio-economic realities of the people of the Arab world.
