Born in Beit Chabab, Lebanon in 1953, Dr. George Kanaan completed a Bachelor of Administration degree at the Lebanese University in Beirut, shortly after the civil war in Lebanon erupted in 1975. He left Lebanon in 1978 to continue his studies in the United States, earning a Master of Accountancy degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1980 and a PhD in Business Administration (Accounting) degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1984.
He moved to Canada in 1984, worked as assistant professor at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario) for three years, then joined Concordia University (Montreal, Quebec) in 1987 until his retirement in 2023. He also taught for short periods at Beijing University of Iron and Steel Technology (1987) and the American University of Beirut (1994-95).
At Concordia University, Dr. Kanaan was appointed Chair, Department of Accountancy for five years followed by the position of Associate Dean, Academic and Student Affairs at the John Molson School of Business for 18 years. He oversaw the creation of new undergraduate programs, changes to existing programs, and the progress of thousands of students throughout their studies, from admission to the various programs until graduation. He advised students on various academic and personal issues, helping them solve their problems, and guiding them through the maze of regulations and policies in the academic milieu.
His research on various financial accounting topics was published in academic journals and presented at national and international conferences. He has co-authored a leading textbook in financial accounting, currently in its eighth edition.
Dr. Kanaan attributes his success to the support of his family, and he enjoys reading, camping and gardening.
