November 29 - Spotlight on Dr. Faisal Joseph

Dr Faisal Joseph has been practicing law as a litigation lawyer for almost 40 years. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, he started practicing law in Nova Scotia with Burchell MacDougal & Gruchy. Faisal became a partner there in a short 3 years. Faisal also acted as a per diem provincial and federal prosecutor in Nova Scotia, as well as the chair of the criminal section of the Canadian Bar Association, Nova Scotia branch.  After 8 years, because of an illness in his family, he moved to London, Ontario, and became a partner at Lerners LLP, (140 member firm), a litigation law firm, where he worked in human rights, insurance and criminal law. 
Faisal was recognized by the Premier of Ontario for his special contribution to hate crime legislation, security issues and international human rights and justice in 2004. He also served as president of the Islamic Center of Southwestern Ontario and chairman of Association of London Muslims for a number of years.
For the last 15 years, Faisal has been a participant in fundraising activities for Lawyers Feed the Hungry, and has also served as a newspaper columnist, television commentator, and activist for peace, justice, and security in the Middle East. In 2009 he was selected to participate as a speaker in the Vatican with an audience with Pope Benedict over a 3 day conference on religious leadership and security in times of crisis. He is known for his specialized work in interfaith dialogue, both nationally and internationally.
In 2015, Faisal was the recipient of the Law Society medal of Ontario, which is the highest award given to a trial lawyer for excellence in the practice of law and for contributions outside the practice of law. He also received the Middlesex Law association Award for distinguished service in 2012, as well as Her Majesty Diamond Jubilee Award for public service.
He was recognized by the RCMP for his work and by the OPP Commissioners. He was also the recipient of the Litigation Counsel of America Award for excellence in the art of advocacy in trial and appellate courts. Faisal has served as an advisor to two former prime ministers and cabinet ministers on security, constitutional issues, and legislation. His advice was sought by 2 former US Secretaries of State, as well as the CIA, FBI, RCMP, and CSIS on profiling, security legislation, human rights and proper investigative procedures. 
Faisal was one of several legal counsel who had standing to appear before the Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar.
Finally, in 2022, Faisal received an Honorary Doctorate of Law, from his alma mater, St Francis Xavier University, for his contributions, both in and out of the practice of law.
