Lebanese Independence Day 2024

Today, as we mark Lebanese Independence Day, we reflect on the enduring spirit of a nation that has overcome immense challenges to secure its freedom. This day commemorates the struggle of the Lebanese people against colonial rule in 1943, a testament to their resilience and determination.

However, this year’s Independence Day comes amidst a somber reality. Lebanon faces a devastating war that has claimed countless lives, displaced families, and deepened an already dire humanitarian crisis. Israel’s ongoing aggression and violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty compromise the very independence we celebrate today, as airstrikes and incursions have forced communities into unimaginable hardship and stripped them of their security and dignity.

The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting the Lebanese people during this critical time. We call on all parties to urgently enact a ceasefire to end the violence and suffering. NCCAR will continue to advocate for increased evacuation efforts to bring those in danger to safety and will work tirelessly to ensure development funding and humanitarian assistance reach those in need.

On this Independence Day, we honor the courage of the Lebanese people and their determination to protect their sovereignty. May this moment inspire renewed global solidarity and meaningful action toward peace, justice, and the rebuilding of Lebanon.
