Ottawa, December 16, 2024 – Today, the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) held a meeting with Mr. Robert Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to address key issues impacting the Arab community in Canada and discuss Canada's involvement in the Middle East amidst ongoing crises.
NCCAR representatives included President Rania Hamdan and Board Members Omar Ghandour and Abeer Hindi.
The meeting highlighted NCCAR's dedication to advocating for the Arab community in Canada and enhancing relations between Canada and the Arab world.
NCCAR proposed several recommendations:
- Increase Humanitarian Aid to Lebanon.
- Promote a Lasting Ceasefire in Lebanon by bolstering regional stability through Canada's diplomatic efforts; and,
- To address the Syrian Refugee Crisis by supporting resettlement efforts and reconstruction initiatives for safe returns.
Mr. Oliphant emphasized Canada's humanitarian aid to Lebanon as a non-political approach, highlighting the commitment to safeguarding Canadians and it's tax protection.
Regarding Syria, he stated that Canada is monitoring developments closely and supports Syria's sovereignty over its territories.
NCCAR expressed gratitude for Mr. Oliphant's response, seeing it as a positive step towards ongoing dialogue between Arab groups and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
