NCCAR calls for an independent investigation and for more protection for reporters after killing of Al-Jazeera reporter during Israeli Raid.
(Ottawa, May 11, 2022): Shireen Abu Akleh , an Iconic Palestinian-American journalist working for Qatari Channel Al-Jazeera has been killed during a routine press coverage in the West Bank city of Jenin, Palestine. At the time of her death, Abu Akleh was wearing the distinctive press and protective gear reporters use while on the scene.
NCCAR condemns the targeted killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and any other journalist on duty, calls for a prompt and independent investigation into her murder, more protection for journalists and more assistance to Palestinians living under strained conditions.
“Shireen is known across the Arab world for her professional work. She has been living, witnessing and reporting on the daily clashes in Palestine for the past 25 years. This is a great loss for the whole world” Abdullatif Al-Sheikh, NCCAR president said.
NCCAR asks all parties involved in the conflict to take concrete action to conduct prompt, impartial, thorough and independent investigation
NCCAR also calls on the Canadian government to play a more active role in ensuring the rights and freedom of the journalists covering the conflicts in Palestine. It renews its call for Canada to continue to provide much-needed assistance to the Palestinians to improve their daily plight.

Le NCCAR appelle à une enquête indépendante et à plus de protection pour les journalistes après le meurtre d'une journaliste d'Al-Jazeera lors d'un raid israélien.
(Ottawa, le 11 mai 2022) : Shireen Abu Akleh, journaliste américano-palestinienne emblématique travaillant pour la chaîne qatarie Al-Jazeera, a été tuée lors d'une couverture médiatique de routine dans la ville cisjordanienne de Jénine, en Palestine. Au moment de sa mort, Abu Akleh portait l'équipement de presse et de protection distinctif que les journalistes utilisent lorsqu'ils sont sur les lieux.
Le NCCAR condamne l'assassinat ciblé de la journaliste Shireen Abu Akleh et de tout autre journaliste en service, demande une enquête rapide et indépendante sur son meurtre, davantage de protection pour les journalistes et davantage d'aide aux Palestiniens vivant dans des conditions difficiles.
« Shireen est connue dans le monde arabe pour son travail professionnel. Elle vit, témoigne et rapporte les affrontements quotidiens en Palestine depuis 25 ans. C'est une grande perte pour le monde entier », a déclaré Abdullatif Al-Sheikh, président du NCCAR.
Le NCCAR demande à toutes les parties impliquées dans le conflit de prendre des mesures concrètes pour mener une enquête rapide, impartiale, approfondie et indépendante.
Le NCCAR demande également au gouvernement canadien de jouer un rôle plus actif pour garantir les droits et la liberté des journalistes qui couvrent les conflits en Palestine. Il renouvelle son appel au Canada pour qu'il continue de fournir l'aide dont les Palestiniens ont tant besoin pour améliorer leur sort quotidien.
