Ottawa, Canada — The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) expresses profound disappointment regarding recent statements by some Canadian politicians objecting to the inclusion of an Arabic song about peace during the Remembrance Day ceremony at Sir Robert Borden High School. We are particularly concerned by remarks from MPP Lisa MacLeod, who labeled the inclusion as an "egregious incident" and called for disciplinary action against the school’s principal.
NCCAR stands firm in its commitment to inclusivity and respect for Canada's diversity, including the contributions of Arab Canadians, especially as we remember those who have made sacrifices for peace and freedom. While we acknowledge that Remembrance Day songs traditionally feature Canada’s official languages, the choice of an Arabic peace song aligns with the universal themes of the day: the shared pursuit of freedom, the honor of those who served, and the collective longing for peace—a struggle that resonates with people of diverse backgrounds.
The song in question, with lyrics that speak broadly to the experiences of oppressed populations, is not exclusively tied to any one cause but represents the universal desire for peace and liberation—a sentiment deeply rooted in Canada’s multicultural identity. This message resonates not only with Canadians but with all individuals worldwide who value justice and freedom. At a time when acts of remembrance should unite us in honoring shared ideals, NCCAR encourages respect for diverse expressions of these values, particularly in spaces of learning.
“The strength of Canada lies in our commitment to inclusion and understanding," said NCCAR President Rania Hamdan. “On Remembrance Day, we remember all those who sacrificed for peace, regardless of language or background. We hope that in honoring our diversity, we also encourage young Canadians to reflect on the global importance of peace and justice. NCCAR stands with Sir Robert Borden High School’s decision to recognize these values and to provide students with a moment to reflect on peace in all its forms.”
NCCAR remains committed to supporting initiatives that bring communities together, celebrating the contributions of Arab Canadians, and fostering mutual understanding within Canada’s multicultural society. We urge all public figures to uphold these values by promoting unity and respect, especially on such solemn occasions.
NCCAR is a national, charitable organization comprised of Canadians of diverse backgrounds interested in building strong ties between Canadians and the peoples of the Arab World. Principles that underpin NCCAR’s work are those that Canadians cherish: truth, justice, freedom, democracy, equality and security for all people as found in international law, including universal human rights and international humanitarian law along with Canadian public policies based on the rule of law and multilateral cooperation as the principle means of solving the world’s challenges.
