Ceasfire agreement for Lebanon and Israel

Ottawa, November 27, 2024 – A ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel officially took effect today, marking a pivotal step in de-escalating the conflict that has caused widespread destruction, displacement, and human suffering.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the conflict, which began on September 23, 2024, has resulted in over 3,823 deaths and more than 15,859 injuries, leaving communities shattered and essential infrastructure devastated. The toll underscores the immense human cost of the violence and the urgent need for comprehensive peace-building efforts.

The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) welcomes this significant development and stresses the urgent need for both parties to adhere to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.  In parallel, it is crucial to focus on mobilizing a strong, sovereign Lebanese army capable of defending all of Lebanon against Israeli aggression without binding limitations that compromise its effectiveness or independence. Building such a force is essential to safeguarding Lebanon’s territorial integrity and ensuring long-term stability.

At the same time, addressing the root causes of the broader conflict remains imperative. The ongoing illegal occupation of Palestinian territories is a significant driver of instability. The NCCAR calls on Canada to play a leading role in advocating for an end to the occupation, the recognition of the State of Palestine, and the upholding of Palestinian sovereignty and rights as enshrined in international law. Without justice for Palestine, sustainable peace in the region cannot be achieved.

While the ceasefire brings relief and hope to affected communities, it also serves as a rallying call for collective action. The NCCAR urges the Lebanese diaspora and the international community to come together to rebuild a stronger Lebanon—one that is resilient, self-reliant, and capable of providing safety and prosperity for its people.

"The task ahead is immense, but so is our resolve. This is a moment for all of us, united by our shared heritage and commitment to justice, to mobilize resources, expertise, and support to help Lebanon rise stronger than ever before," said a Rania Hamdan, president of NCCAR.

In parallel, NCCAR highlights the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the ongoing violence continues to devastate lives and livelihoods. The council calls for an immediate end to what is being recognized as genocide and urges Canada and the international community to take a firm stand in advocating for peace, accountability, and the protection of human rights.

The NCCAR also calls on the Canadian government and all political parties to actively support these efforts, both in Lebanon and Gaza. Canada must lead by example, championing diplomacy and humanitarian aid while working towards just and lasting solutions for all communities affected by conflict in the region.

The NCCAR remains dedicated to advocating for peace, supporting relief efforts, and fostering initiatives to rebuild Lebanon and promote justice and reconciliation throughout the region.

NCCAR is a not-for-profit charitable organization based in Ottawa, dedicated to fostering greater understanding and knowledge among Canadians about the cultural, historical, and socio-economic realities of the people of the Arab world.
