Correspondent Farah Omar and Cameraman Rabih Me'mari, dedicated journalists who were committed to truth and transparency, lost their lives while courageously performing their duties. Their unwavering commitment to journalism and the pursuit of truth serves as a reminder of the risks journalists face worldwide in their pursuit of informing the public.

NCCAR extends heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of Correspondent Farah Omar and Cameraman Rabih Me'mari. We stand in solidarity with the entire journalism community in Lebanon and Palestine during this difficult time.

Freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of democracy, and such acts of violence against journalists not only rob families of their loved ones but also undermine the principles of free speech and open discourse. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be swiftly brought to justice to ensure that such acts do not go unpunished.

To date, since October 7th, 49 journalists (Committee to Protect Journalist, New York www.Cpj.org) and media workers have been confirmed dead: 46 Palestinian and 3 Lebanese. This grim statistic highlights the urgent need for increased efforts to protect journalists and ensure their safety in conflict zones.

In these challenging times, it is crucial for governments, media organizations, and civil society to work together to create an environment that safeguards journalists and allows them to carry out their work without fear of violence or persecution.

NCCAR calls on the international community, human rights organizations and the authorities in Lebanon to thoroughly investigate this tragedy, bring the responsible parties to justice, and take immediate steps to ensure the safety and protection of journalists in the region.

NCCAR calls on all international community free press and human rights organizations to urge the United Nations to thoroughly investigate this tragedy, including other attacks on media and emergency personnel, ensuring accountability over any such further attacks and to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and protection of journalists in Lebanon, the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the Middle East region.

As we mourn the loss of Correspondent Farah Omar and Cameraman Rabih Me'mari, let their sacrifice be a rallying cry for the protection of press freedom and the pursuit of truth. NCCAR remains committed to advocating for the safety and well-being of journalists worldwide.

NCCAR is a not-for-profit charitable organization based in Ottawa, dedicated to fostering greater understanding and knowledge among Canadians about the cultural, historical, and socio-economic realities of the people of the Arab world.
