National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) Condemns Illegal Attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza and Urges Upholding International Humanitarian Law

Ottawa, Canada - Wednesday, 18 October 2023- The National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) stands firm in its condemnation of the recent illegal attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza and the ongoing targeting of civilians by the Israeli military in the region.

Today's horrifying incident in Gaza, where Al Ahli Arab Hospital was deliberately struck, constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law. Hospitals are sacred sanctuaries for healing and refuge, serving individuals regardless of their background, and providing essential medical care. Targeting these facilities not only endangers countless innocent lives but also blatantly disregards the principles of humanity.

The enduring conflict in Gaza has resulted in the tragic loss of numerous lives, including innocent civilians, children, journalists, and healthcare workers who tirelessly strive to deliver critical medical care amidst the prevailing chaos.

The heart-wrenching images and stories emerging from Gaza underscore the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent further suffering.

NCCAR reiterates its unwavering commitment to a peaceful and equitable resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one that guarantees the rights and security of all parties involved.

The indiscriminate targeting of civilians, whether in the form of airstrikes on hospitals or residential areas, represents a severe breach of international law and human rights. The bombing of the Al Ahli Arab hospital is a clear violation of UN General Assembly Resolution No. 2675 (1970) which states that “hospital zones or similar refuge should not be the object of military operations.”

Such actions undermine the principles of humanitarian law and the duty to safeguard the well-being of those not directly involved in hostilities.

We call upon the international community, with a special appeal to the Government of Canada, to employ all necessary diplomatic means to put an end to the violence in Gaza and to implore all parties to prioritize the safeguarding of civilian lives and critical infrastructure.

The National Council on Canada Arab Relations expresses its solidarity with the people of Palestine and all those affected by this protracted conflict. We beseech the global community to collaborate in pursuit of a lasting peace that upholds the dignity and rights of all individuals in the region.

Ottawa, Canada - Mercredi 18 octobre 2023 - Le Conseil national des relations entre le Canada et le monde arabe (NCCAR) demeure ferme dans sa condamnation de l'attaque illégale récente contre l'hôpital Al Ahli al Arabi à Gaza et du ciblage continu des civils par l'armée israélienne dans la région.

L'incident horrifiant d'aujourd'hui à Gaza, où l'hôpital Al Ahli Al Arabi a été délibérément frappé, constitue une grave violation du droit international humanitaire. Les hôpitaux sont des sanctuaires sacrés de guérison et de refuge, au service de tous, quelle que soit leur origine, et fournissant des soins médicaux essentiels. Le ciblage de ces installations met non seulement en danger de nombreuses vies innocentes, mais méprise ouvertement les principes de l'humanité.

Le conflit persistant à Gaza a entraîné la perte tragique de nombreuses vies, y compris des civils innocents, des enfants, des journalistes et des professionnels de la santé qui s'efforcent sans relâche de fournir des soins médicaux essentiels au milieu du chaos prévalent. Les images et les récits déchirants qui émergent de Gaza soulignent le besoin urgent d'un arrêt immédiat des hostilités pour prévenir davantage de souffrances.

Le NCCAR réitère son engagement indéfectible en faveur d'une résolution pacifique et équitable du conflit israélo-palestinien, garantissant les droits et la sécurité de toutes les parties impliquées. Le ciblage indiscriminé des civils, que ce soit sous forme de frappes aériennes sur des hôpitaux ou des zones résidentielles, représente une grave violation du droit international et des droits de l'homme.

Le bombardement de l'hôpital arabe Al Ahli constitue une violation manifeste de la Résolution de l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies n° 2675 (1970) qui stipule que "les zones hospitalières ou refuges similaires ne doivent pas être l'objet d'opérations militaires". De telles actions sapent les principes du droit humanitaire et le devoir de protéger le bien-être de ceux qui ne sont pas directement impliqués dans les hostilités.

Nous en appelons à la communauté internationale, avec un appel spécial au gouvernement du Canada, à employer tous les moyens diplomatiques nécessaires pour mettre fin à la violence à Gaza et à enjoindre à toutes les parties de prioriser la protection des vies civiles et de l'infrastructure essentielle.

Le Conseil national des relations entre le Canada et le monde arabe exprime sa solidarité avec le peuple de Palestine et tous ceux touchés par ce conflit prolongé. Nous exhortons la communauté mondiale à collaborer en vue d'une paix durable qui respecte la dignité et les droits de tous les individus de la région.
