Abdo (Albert) El Tassi: A Champion of Diversity and Philanthropy
Born and raised in Kherbetrouha, Lebanon, Abdo (Albert) El Tassi graduated from Al-Azhar University of Egypt in 1966. He immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, in October 1969 and began working shortly after his arrival in the shipping department of Peerless Garments Ltd. Starting his career as a truck loader, El Tassi’s dedication and hard work led him to rise to General Manager by 1979. He took over the complete management of the company in May 1986 and was named President and CEO in June 2006.
El Tassi is a proud Canadian citizen since 1975 and a distinguished member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba. His contributions to Canada and Winnipeg have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Queen’s Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilee Medals, as well as the Winnipeg 150 Medal.
As an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel, El Tassi takes immense pride in making Winnipeg home for himself, his wife Samira, and their children. Together, the couple is deeply committed to charitable initiatives. El Tassi has been a member of The Winnipeg Foundation’s Board since 2012, contributing to key committees such as Finance and Audit, Development, and Strategic Initiatives.
El Tassi is a passionate advocate for diversity in leadership and collaboration between organizations, recognizing these as essential for fostering growth and relevance. Deeply rooted in his Islamic faith, he emphasizes the alignment between charitable giving in Islam and The Winnipeg Foundation’s mission. His vision of philanthropy is inspired by both tradition and modern community needs, focusing on sustainable, long-term impact.
Through his work, Abdo El Tassi continues to build bridges across cultures, encouraging partnerships and shared resources to strengthen the fabric of society.
