Member of Parliament for Halifax West, Lena Metlege Diab has distinguished herself as a dedicated advocate for cultural diversity and heritage preservation in Canada. With a deep connection to her Lebanese roots, she spearheaded the establishment of Lebanese Heritage Month in the country, officially designating November as a time to celebrate and recognize the profound contributions of Lebanese-Canadians to Canada's multicultural fabric.

Her efforts have not only enriched the appreciation of Canada's diverse cultural heritage but also fostered unity and inclusivity. Lena Metlege Diab's commitment to promoting cultural diversity and heritage preservation has left an indelible mark on the nation's cultural landscape, making her a pivotal figure in the ongoing celebration of multiculturalism in Canada.

Lena Metlege Diab is the daughter of Lebanese immigrants to Canada and the eldest of six children. Born in Nova Scotia, she was raised in Lebanon for 8 years attending École de Nazareth Kfarzeina elementary and returned to Halifax in the face of war at the age of 11.

It was by seeing how hard her parents worked to make Halifax home for her and her siblings that her lifelong commitment to nurturing resilient and supportive families and communities took root. 

Ms. Diab was first elected in 2013 to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly representing Halifax Armdale and was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia as the first female Attorney General and Minister of Justice, as well as Minister of Immigration. As Minister of Justice and Attorney General, she worked to reach a settlement outside the courtroom in the Nova Scotia Home for Coloured Children case, created and co-chaired the first-of-its-kind Access to Justice Coordinating Committee to make our justice system more efficient and effective, and helped launch the Court Monitored Drug Treatment Program to offer alternative sentencing to people with dependencies.

In July 2015, the Immigration portfolio became her exclusive cabinet position. Throughout her eight years in the position, she led Nova Scotia to reach record-breaking immigration numbers. Nova Scotia became the first province in Canada to take advantage of Express Entry, launching two Express Entry pilots and two new streams for immigrant entrepreneurs and international students, all while increasing retention rates. Ms. Diab also led the province’s humanitarian initiative to resettle Syrian refugees, working closely with the Government of Canada, settlement service providers, and other key partners.

She was re-elected to the Legislature on May 30, 2017, and was appointed as both Minister of Immigration, and Minister of Acadian Affairs and Francophonie. In 2020, she was additionally appointed as Minister of Labour and Advanced Education, and held all three roles until August 15, 2021, when she secured the federal nomination for Halifax West and was elected as a Member of Parliament on September 20, 2021.

Ms. Diab is passionate about making Nova Scotia more diverse. Under her leadership on the Executive Council of Nova Scotia, the province welcomed more immigrants, strengthened its immigration programs, and built global networks. She worked diligently and tirelessly for the Acadian and Francophone communities of Nova Scotia with a focus and dedication to developing a Nova Scotia Francophone Immigration Action Plan. 

In her role as Minister of Acadian Affairs and Francophonie, Ms. Diab promoted the Acadian and francophone language, culture, and heritage on the provincial, national, and international stage. She created a Francophone and Acadian advisory committee to provide advice and information directly to her on issues that are important to Nova Scotia’s Acadian and francophone community. In this role, she also worked with the state of Louisiana to advance an agreement to collaborate across multiple sectors, including economic development, education, training, research, tourism, arts, and culture. Additionally, she was a member of the CMFC, a Ministerial intergovernmental organization on the Canadian Francophonie that brings together federal, provincial, and territorial ministers responsible for the Canadian Francophonie to address issues and maintain a dialogue favourable to the development of public policies strengthening linguistic duality in Canada.

Since her election at the provincial level in 2013, Ms. Diab has been member of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF), an association of the parliaments of Francophone countries. From July 2019 to August 2021, she served as Chargée de mission de la Région Amérique de l’APF, working closely with representatives from several states.

Prior to entering politics, she had a successful legal career for over 20 years. Her passion was providing effective advice to individuals, businesses, not-for-profits, and charities (communicating with clients in 3 languages: Arabic, English, and French). As a practicing lawyer, she was an active member for many years with the Association des Juristes d'expression française de la Nouvelle-Écosse (AJEFNE), an association dedicated to promoting the accessibility of French legal services. She was also instrumental at that time in the development of several Youtube videos on immigration and Family Law.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Saint Mary’s University, and a Masters of Public Administration and a Law degree from Dalhousie University.

Ms. Diab was the first female President of the Canadian-Lebanon Society of Halifax (1993) and served seven terms as President thereafter, accomplishing many important milestones. She has also served on the Residential Tenancies Board.

In her current role as a Member of Parliament, Ms. Diab serves on several parliamentary groups, including as a Vice-Chair of the Canada-United States Interparliamentary Group (CEUS).

She also sits on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research and serves as the Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

In Parliament, she has been a strong voice for her over 100,000 constituents, and successfully led the effort to have November designated as Lebanese Heritage Month at the national level.

She has received numerous honours and accolades, including the designation of King’s Counsel.

Her personal values are rooted in respect for diversity, inclusion, collaboration, and fairness.  She is the proud mother of four children and has five grandchildren.

November 1, 2023 marks the beginning of the Lebanese Heritage Month in Canada. This momentous occasion was made possible through the unanimous approval of Bill S-246 in Canada's Parliament.
Mrs. Lena Metlege Diab’s, member for Halifax West, introduction of this bill and its subsequent passage into law is a remarkable achievement that underscores the invaluable contributions of Lebanese Canadians to our nation's social, economic, cultural, religious, philanthropic, and political fabric.

The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) is deeply saddened and troubled to learn that an Israeli air attack has killed and injured a "large number" of displaced people who were seeking shelter at St. Porphyrius Church compound in Gaza. This tragic incident not only represents a severe violation of religious and cultural heritage but also underscores the urgent need for the international community to take immediate action to protect innocent civilians and places of refuge during the ongoing conflict.

Located in Gaza, the St. Porphyrius Church, the third oldest church in the world, had opened its doors to those seeking safety from the violence that has engulfed the region. The loss of life and injuries sustained by those taking shelter at this sacred site are a grave tragedy and a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict.

NCCAR strongly condemns such actions that put the lives of innocent civilians, including children, at risk and result in the destruction of historic and sacred landmarks. We call on all parties involved to respect the sanctity of religious sites, protect displaced individuals, and refrain from acts of violence that endanger civilian lives.

This heartbreaking incident emphasizes the urgent need for a peaceful and just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. NCCAR believes that only through dialogue, cooperation, and adherence to the principles of international law can lasting peace and stability be achieved in the Middle East.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families affected by this tragic event, and we reiterate our call for an end to the cycle of violence and the protection of cultural and religious heritage in conflict zones. It is our hope that such devastating incidents may never be repeated.

National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) Condemns Illegal Attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza and Urges Upholding International Humanitarian Law

Ottawa, Canada - Wednesday, 18 October 2023- The National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) stands firm in its condemnation of the recent illegal attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza and the ongoing targeting of civilians by the Israeli military in the region.

Today's horrifying incident in Gaza, where Al Ahli Arab Hospital was deliberately struck, constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law. Hospitals are sacred sanctuaries for healing and refuge, serving individuals regardless of their background, and providing essential medical care. Targeting these facilities not only endangers countless innocent lives but also blatantly disregards the principles of humanity.

The enduring conflict in Gaza has resulted in the tragic loss of numerous lives, including innocent civilians, children, journalists, and healthcare workers who tirelessly strive to deliver critical medical care amidst the prevailing chaos. 

The heart-wrenching images and stories emerging from Gaza underscore the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent further suffering.

NCCAR reiterates its unwavering commitment to a peaceful and equitable resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one that guarantees the rights and security of all parties involved. 

The indiscriminate targeting of civilians, whether in the form of airstrikes on hospitals or residential areas, represents a severe breach of international law and human rights. The bombing of the Al Ahli Arab hospital is a clear violation of UN General Assembly Resolution No. 2675 (1970) which states that “hospital zones or similar refuge should not be the object of military operations.”  

Such actions undermine the principles of humanitarian law and the duty to safeguard the well-being of those not directly involved in hostilities.

We call upon the international community, with a special appeal to the Government of Canada, to employ all necessary diplomatic means to put an end to the violence in Gaza and to implore all parties to prioritize the safeguarding of civilian lives and critical infrastructure.

The National Council on Canada Arab Relations expresses its solidarity with the people of Palestine and all those affected by this protracted conflict. We beseech the global community to collaborate in pursuit of a lasting peace that upholds the dignity and rights of all individuals in the region.

Ottawa, Canada - The National Council on Canada Arab Relations is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Palestine, with a focus on Gaza and the West Bank. We express our heartfelt concern for the well-being of the innocent civilians affected by recent events and emphasize the importance of fostering peace and stability amidst the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We acknowledge the impact of these events on both the Palestinian and Israeli communities.

Understanding the multifaceted nature of the situation is critical. Recent hostilities are a result of various complex factors, including the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, reflected in the continued siege on Gaza, the continued occupation of Palestinian territories in the West Bank and the hardships endured by the Palestinian communities. 

While we do not condone the use of force, it is essential to appreciate the underlying causes that have contributed to the current cycle of violence and to work collectively toward a just and lasting resolution. One particularly concerning aspect is the issue of collective punishment, which we strongly oppose and assert to be incompatible with international law. It is imperative that all stakeholders strive for a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and dignity of all those affected by this enduring conflict, adhering to international legal principles and recognizing the shared concerns of both communities. The situation in Gaza and the West Bank has reached a critical juncture, necessitating immediate action to address the root causes of the conflict while upholding international laws and principles.

The National Council on Canada Arab Relations urges the following measures to de-escalate tensions, alleviate the severe humanitarian challenges in Gaza and the West Bank, and put an end to collective punishment, a practice unequivocally prohibited by international law:

Lifting the Blockade on Gaza: The longstanding blockade of Gaza, encompassing restrictions on vital resources like water and electricity, contravenes international law as it represents a form of collective punishment. We call for the prompt and complete removal of the blockade, as it directly affects the rights and well-being of the residents.

Immediate Humanitarian Aid: Withholding access to clean water, food, healthcare, and other essential services in Gaza and the West Bank constitutes not only a serious breach of human rights but also a violation of international law. We appeal to the international community to deliver immediate and sustained humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people to address their urgent needs.

Ceasefire and Diplomatic Engagement: International law supports peaceful conflict resolution. We urge an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life and suffering. All parties must engage in meaningful dialogues to address the underlying causes of the conflict, respecting international legal principles, and working towards a just and lasting peace.

Release all civilian Hostages; including Palestinian detainees as part of confidence-building measures, we call on Hamas to release any hostages they may be holding, and Israel to consider the release of Palestinian prisoners, with a focus on non-combatants and individuals held without charge.

Those steps could contribute to de-escalation and enhance prospects for a peaceful resolution while acknowledging the shared concerns of both Palestinian and Israeli communities. The imposition of collective punishment on the Palestinian people is a matter of profound concern and is unambiguously contrary to international law. The international community has a moral and legal responsibility to respond swiftly and decisively to alleviate humanitarian crises and facilitate a durable resolution to the conflict in full compliance with international legal standards. The National Council on Canada Arab Relations underscores the importance of respecting international law, condemning collective punishment, and making a coordinated effort to safeguard the rights and well-being of the Palestinian population in Gaza and the West Bank while acknowledging the shared concerns of both Palestinian and Jewish communities. Upholding legal principles that prohibit collective punishment is crucial, and we advocate for a just and enduring peace. We call upon all involved parties and the international community to prioritize the relief of suffering, condemn collective punishment, engage in constructive negotiations that honour and uphold international law, and consider the release of hostages by Hamas and prisoners by Israel. Ultimately, these steps can pave the way for stability, security, and prosperity for all impacted communities and the broader region.

Le Conseil national des relations canado-arabes demande une action immédiate pour faire face à une éventuelle crise humanitaire au Soudan

Ottawa, Canada – Alors que le Canada relocalise ses efforts pour faire sortir les Canadiens bloqués du Soudan de la capitale Khartoum en suspendant les vols mais en passant aux évacuations terrestres, le Conseil national des relations canado-arabes (NCCAR) exprime sa profonde préoccupation face au conflit en cours au Soudan alors que la population civile de la capitale Khartoum se retrouve piégée dans un conflit militaire qui pourrait conduire à des violations généralisées des droits humains. L'instabilité politique et la violence qui ont tourmenté Khartoum récemment ont conduit à une situation désastreuse pour les Soudanais dans la ville de 5 millions d'habitants.

Le NCCAR condamne la violence en cours et appelle à une action immédiate pour mettre un terme au conflit et résoudre la crise qui a transformé la capitale soudanaise en théâtre de bataille entre l'armée soudanaise et les Forces de soutien rapide, un groupe paramilitaire. Le NCCAR craint que cela ne conduise à une catastrophe humanitaire.

La journaliste soudanaise Dalia Abdel Mounem a déclaré au NCCAR que "l'aide et l'assistance humanitaires sont vitales et les installations médicales nécessaires ont été touchées, les fournitures médicales sont rares, les denrées alimentaires de base s'épuisent. Les volontaires soudanais et les groupes de résistance font de leur mieux dans ces circonstances désastreuses mais ont besoin d'aide".

Le NCCAR appelle également la communauté internationale à fournir une aide humanitaire au Soudan. Le NCCAR exhorte le gouvernement canadien et d'autres pays à travailler avec les organisations locales pour s'assurer que l'aide parvient à ceux qui en ont le plus besoin.

« Le Canada a une fière tradition d'appuyer les causes humanitaires partout dans le monde, a déclaré Rania Hamdan, vice-présidente du NCCAR. "Nous exhortons le gouvernement canadien à envisager de soutenir le peuple soudanais pendant cette période difficile et à travailler avec d'autres pays pour trouver une solution pacifique à la crise."

The National Council on Canada Arab Relations Celebrates April Arab Heritage Month with a “Food & Fashion” Iftar Dinner. Honorable David McGuinty Keynote Speaker

Ottawa, ON - The National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) is pleased to announce its upcoming celebration of April Arab Heritage Month with a special “Food & Fashion” Iftar dinner. The event will take place on April 19, 2023, at the KS on the Keys Restaurant in Ottawa starting at 7:30 pm.

The “Food & Fashion” Iftar dinner is an opportunity for Canadians of all backgrounds to come together and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Arab community. The event will feature a delicious meal of traditional Arab cuisine, as well as fashion highlighting the beauty and diversity of Arab fashion.

We are honored to have the Honorable David McGuinty, Member of Parliament for Ottawa South, as our keynote speaker for the evening. Mr. McGuinty has been a strong advocate for multiculturalism and diversity in Canada, and key architect of the bill that sets April as the month of Arab Heritage in Canada. This historic legislation recognizes the important contributions of Arab Canadians to Canadian society and culture.NCCAR would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Deputy David McGuinty for his tireless efforts in introducing and passing this important legislation. We believe that this legislation will help to promote greater understanding and appreciation for the Arab Canadian community and foster a greater sense of unity and inclusivity among all Canadians. L'événement aura lieu le 19 avril 2023 au restaurant KS on the Keys à Ottawa à partir de 19 h 30.Le dîner Iftar « Gastronomie & Mode » est une occasion pour les Canadiens de tous horizons de se réunir et de célébrer le riche patrimoine culturel de la communauté arabe. NCCAR Calls for Intensifying Relief Efforts for the Two Peoples in Syria and Türkiye and Lifting Sanctions on Syria

(Ottawa, February 8, 2023): The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) expresses its sincere sympathy and condolences to the peoples of Syria and Türkiye. It also wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured because of the devastating earthquake that struck the territories of the two countries last Monday morning, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, injuries, missing and afflicted.  

As it closely follows the events in both countries following the catastrophic tragedy, NCCAR is making every effort possible to communicate with the concerned parties and urging them to provide the necessary assistance to contribute to alleviating the suffering in the impacted areas.

While appreciating the relief efforts by the local population, the United Nations, governments, and local, regional, and international NGOs, NCCAR is concerned about the apparent shortage and slowdowns in the delivery of emergency aid and the facilitation of the entry of rescue teams to neighborhoods affected by the repercussions of the war since 2011.

Especially in Syria, the devastating earthquake has hit areas that are already suffering from poor services, poverty, disease outbreaks, overcrowding of displaced people and refugees, and severe shortages of food and medicine supplies. Not to mention the harsh winter conditions, electricity and communications outages, and the scarcity of medical personnel and fuel, which severely impede rescue efforts.

At this difficult time, NCCAR appeals to the international community to focus on the purely human concern aspect considering this disaster. We also urge both the Syrian government and the opposition factions to protect relief operations, facilitate the tasks of their crews, and keep them away from any military or political disputes that may exacerbate the suffering of the civilian population.

NCCAR also calls on Canada and the international community to contribute more effectively to the provision of urgent humanitarian aid in both countries, in addition to working to lift sanctions on Syria and open airspace and border passages to ensure fair and effective entry for relief convoys, as is the case in Türkiye.

Le NCCAR appelle à intensifier les efforts de secours pour les deux peoples en Syrie et à Türkiye et à lever les sanctions contre la Syrie

(Ottawa le 8 février) :  Le Conseil national des relations canado-arabes (NCCAR) exprime sa sincère sympathie et ses condoléances aux peuples de la Syrie et de la Turquie. Il souhaite également un prompt rétablissement aux blessés du tremblement de terre dévastateur qui a frappé les territoires des deux pays lundi matin dernier, faisant des dizaines de milliers de morts, de blessés, de disparus et d'affligés.

Comme il suit de près les événements dans les deux pays à la suite de la tragédie catastrophique, le NCCAR met tout en œuvre pour communiquer avec les parties concernées et les exhorte à fournir l'assistance nécessaire pour contribuer à soulager les souffrances dans les zones touchées.

Tout en appréciant les efforts de secours déployés par la population locale, les Nations Unies, les gouvernements et les ONG locales, régionales et internationales, le NCCAR est préoccupé par la pénurie apparente et les ralentissements dans l'acheminement de l'aide d'urgence et la facilitation de l'entrée des équipes de secours dans les quartiers touchés par les répercussions de la guerre depuis 2011.

Surtout en Syrie, le tremblement de terre dévastateur a frappé des zones qui souffrent déjà de services médiocres, de la pauvreté, d'épidémies, d'un surpeuplement de personnes déplacées et de réfugiés et de graves pénuries de vivres et de médicaments. Sans parler des rudes conditions hivernales, des pannes d'électricité et de communication, et de la pénurie de personnel médical et de carburant, qui entravent gravement les efforts de sauvetage.

En cette période difficile, le NCCAR lance un appel à la communauté internationale pour qu'elle se concentre sur l'aspect purement humain face à cette catastrophe. Nous exhortons également le gouvernement syrien et les factions de l'opposition à protéger les opérations de secours, à faciliter les tâches de leurs équipages et à les tenir à l'écart de tout conflit militaire ou politique susceptible d'aggraver les souffrances de la population civile.

Le NCCAR demande également au Canada et à la communauté internationale de contribuer plus efficacement à la fourniture d'une aide humanitaire d'urgence dans les deux pays, en plus de travailler à la levée des sanctions contre la Syrie et à l'ouverture de l'espace aérien et des passages frontaliers pour assurer une entrée équitable et efficace des convois de secours, comme c'est le cas en Turquie.

المجلس الوطني للعلاقات الكندية العربية يدعو الى تكثيف جهود إغاثة الشعبين في سوريا وتركيا ورفع العقوبات عن سوريا 

(اوتاوا، 8 فبراير 2023): يعرب المجلس الوطني للعلاقات الكندية العربية (NCCAR)، عن خالص مواساته وتعازيه للشعبين الشقيقين في سوريا وتركيا، وتمنياته الصادقة بالشفاء العاجل للمصابين، نتيجة الزلزال المدمر الذي ضـرب أراضي الدولتين صباح الاثنين الماضي وأسفر عن عشرات آلاف الوفيات والإصابات والمفقودين والمنكوبين

وإذ يتابع المجلس عن كثب مجريات الأحداث في كلا البلدين إثر الفاجعة الأليمة، فإنه يبذل جهده في التواصل مع الأطراف المعنية وحثها على توفير ما يلزم للإسهام في تخفيف معاناة المناطق المنكوبة

وفي الوقت الذي يثمن فيه المجلس جهود الإغاثة التي يبذلها السكان المحليون والأمم المتحدة وحكومات الدول ومنظمات المجتمع المدني المحلية والإقليمية والدولية، خاصة تلك المقدمة الى تركيا، فإنه يشعر بقلق حيال النقص والتباطؤ الواضحين في إيصال المساعدات الطارئة وتسهيل دخول فرق الإنقاذ الى الاحياء المتضررة في سوريا جراء تداعيات الحرب الدائرة منذ 2011.

لقد ضرب الزلزال المدمر مناطق، خاصة في سوريا، تعاني بالأساس من سوء الخدمات والفقر وتفشي الامراض وتكدس النازحين واللاجئين ونقص حاد في امدادات الغذاء والدواء. ناهيك عن ظروف الشتاء القاسية وانقطاع الكهرباء والاتصالات وشح الكوادر الطبية والوقود والتي تعيق بشدة جهود الإنقاذ.

في هذا الوقت العصيب، يناشد مجلسنا المجتمع الدولي بأن يركز الجهود على البعد الإنساني البحت في ظل هذه الكارثة. كما نحثُّ كلاً من الحكومة السورية وفصائل المعارضة على حماية عمليات الإغاثة وتسهيل مهام طواقمها وابعادها عن أي تجاذبات عسكرية او سياسية قد تفاقم معاناة السكان المدنيين.

كما يدعو المجلس كندا والمجتمع الدولي الى الاسهام بفاعلية أكبر في توفير المعونات الإنسانية العاجلة في كلا البلدين، الى جانب العمل على رفع العقوبات عن سوريا وفتح الأجواء امام الطيران والممرات الحدودية لضمان دخول عادل وفعال لقوافل الإغاثة مثلما يسير الحال في تركيا.

Democratic Reform Progress in Bahrain Stalled since the February 2011 Mass Protests

(Ottawa, 1 February 2023): The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) condemns claims of suppression to the legal rights of political prisoners in Bahrain and withholding to the freedom of protest and political participation or expression in the country. Since the peaceful protests of 14 February 2011, inspired by the mass protests of Tunisia and Egypt, protestors seem to still face obstacles in exercising their right to the freedom of expression or peaceful activism, mainly in demand for the release of political prisoners.

In 2011, the closure to opposition parties or independent news outlets, outlawed under new laws, has discouraged the political participation in the country, especially due to continued clampdown to public protest or imprisonment to protest leaders jailed with unfair trials. Unfortunately, the intervention of Saudi-led security forces in March 2011, entailing the neighbor states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, brought further violence and political lockdown against protestors with failure to accomplish any permanent political resolution. In response to international concern over the events of 2011, the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) – commissioned by the King of Bahrain, confirmed accounts to systematic acts of suppression to peaceful protest and demanded political reform. Yet sadly, for more than a decade now, political reform remains awaiting, while political rights and claims of suppression also remain a pending issue.

Correspondingly, NCCAR supports efforts for accountable governance sidelining sectarian benefits in the promotion of equal power sharing rights in the state ensuring legal justice rejecting political detention or prison torture. NCCAR also strongly condemns all forms of repression and the use of violence by all parties in Bahrain and calls for the protection of the basic human rights to the freedom of speech and expression, emphasizing on peaceful reform. Furthermore, NCCAR urges all parties to attempt seek fair resolutions to demands of political reform and the implementation of all the recommendations in the BICI report, calling for fair trial and release of all imprisoned civil-society, religious or political activists in the country.

Bahrain has been a peaceful country in the Arab world and in the international arena, where its stability and transition to democracy contribute to the consolidation of stability and prosperity in the MENA region and the world. NCCAR is confident that Bahrain will finally witness the desired transition towards equal democracy and the well-being of better life and equality for all its citizens.

Les progrès de la réforme démocratique à Bahreïn sont au point mort depuis les manifestations de masse de février 2011

(Ottawa, 1er février 2023) : Le Conseil national des relations canado-arabes (NCCAR) condamne les allégations de suppression des droits légaux des prisonniers politiques à Bahreïn et de restriction de la liberté de manifestation et de participation ou d'expression politique dans le pays. Depuis les manifestations pacifiques du 14 février 2011, inspirées par les manifestations de masse en Tunisie et en Égypte, les manifestants semblent toujours rencontrer des obstacles dans l'exercice de leur droit à la liberté d'expression ou à l'activisme pacifique, principalement pour exiger la libération des prisonniers politiques.

En 2011, la fermeture des partis d'opposition ou des organes d'information indépendants, interdits par de nouvelles lois, a découragé la participation politique dans le pays, notamment en raison de la poursuite de la répression des manifestations publiques ou de l'emprisonnement de dirigeants de la contestation dans le cadre de procès inéquitables. Malheureusement, l'intervention des forces de sécurité dirigées par l'Arabie saoudite en mars 2011, impliquant les États voisins du Conseil de coopération du Golfe, a entraîné de nouvelles violences et un blocage politique contre les manifestants sans parvenir à une résolution politique permanente. En réponse à l'inquiétude internationale suscitée par les événements de 2011, la Commission d'enquête indépendante de Bahreïn (BICI) - commandée par le roi de Bahreïn, a confirmé les comptes rendus d'actes systématiques de répression des manifestations pacifiques et a exigé une réforme politique. Pourtant, malheureusement, depuis plus d'une décennie maintenant, la réforme politique reste en suspens, tout comme les droits politiques et les revendications de répression.

En conséquence, le NCCAR soutient les efforts pour une gouvernance responsable en écartant les avantages sectaires dans la promotion des droits de partage égal du pouvoir dans l'État garantissant ainsi une justice légale tout en rejetant la détention politique ou la torture en prison. Le NCCAR condamne également fermement toutes les formes de répression et le recours à la violence par toutes les parties à Bahreïn et appelle à la protection des droits humains fondamentaux à la liberté de parole et d'expression, en mettant l'accent sur une réforme pacifique. En outre, le NCCAR exhorte toutes les parties à tenter de trouver des solutions équitables aux demandes de réforme politique et à la mise en œuvre de toutes les recommandations du rapport BICI, appelant à un procès équitable et à la libération de tous les militants de la société civile, religieux ou politiques emprisonnés dans le pays.

Bahreïn est un pays pacifique dans le monde arabe et sur la scène internationale, où sa stabilité et sa transition vers la démocratie contribuent à la consolidation de la stabilité et de la prospérité dans la région du Moyen-Orient en Afrique du Nord et dans le monde. Le NCCAR est convaincu que Bahreïn sera enfin témoin de la transition souhaitée vers une démocratie égale et le bien-être d'une vie meilleure et l'égalité pour tous ses citoyens.

Morocco has defeated soccer powerhouse Portugal in the World Cup in Qatar to fulfill the dream of millions of Arabs and continues to capture the attention of the tournament. Morocco made history last Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the Al Thumama stadium, in Qatar, by defeating Portugal by 1-0 and becoming the first Arab country to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.

The dream of soccer lovers across all Arab countries came true and was highlighted by a huge support from Moroccan fans who are present in big numbers in all matches. Morocco has managed to eliminate the Iberian duo Spain and Portugal. Now, the Moroccans will face World Cup holders France in the second semifinal to be held tomorrow. If they win, they will face mighty Argentina of Leonel Messi in the final next Sunday.

The ongoing Moroccan national team's historic campaign in Qatar is based on a defense that has yet to concede a goal, and quick counterattacks. Coach Walid Regragui has been in charge of the team for only three months. Morocco's recipe for success in the Qatar Cup includes defensive tactics, speed on the counterattack, the skill of its goalkeeper and a lot of patience. The Arabic squad is succeeding where similar nations have struggled to make it to the second round.

The fact that coach Regragui only took office at the end of August makes the achievement of the national team of Moroccan national even more surprising – by becoming the first Arab team to reach the quarterfinals then the semifinals of a World Cup. All focus now is on beating France to achieve a historical event in Arab sports that will live on for generations to come.

Morroco’s national team has stars like Hakimi, Ziyech and En-Nesyri in its ranks and the revelation Ounahi has been rumoured to be going to giants FC Barcelona.

The Morocco team is not the only one to have a strong defense in this Cup, but they offer a threat on the counterattack that other “smaller” teams do not offer, especially with Achraf Hakimi.

The 24-year-old, who has played for Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and currently Paris Saint-Germain, has intelligently invaded the opponents' penalty area and has been one of the most dynamic full-backs in the Cup.

Tomorrow, when they play against France, Morocco can count on the support from fans across all Arab countries.

L'équipe nationale du Maroc : un rêve footballistique arabe qui devient réalité.

Le Maroc a battu la puissance portugaise du football lors de la Coupe du monde au Qatar pour réaliser le rêve de millions d'Arabes et continue de capter l'attention du tournoi. Le Maroc est entré dans l'histoire le samedi 10 décembre 2022 au stade Al Thumama, au Qatar, en battant le Portugal par 1 à 0 et en devenant le premier pays arabe à atteindre les demi-finales d'une Coupe du monde.

Le rêve des amateurs de football de tous les pays arabes s'est réalisé et a été mis en évidence par un énorme soutien des supporters marocains qui sont présents en grand nombre dans tous les matchs. Le Maroc a réussi à éliminer le duo ibérique Espagne-Portugal. Désormais, les Marocains affronteront la France, tenante de la Coupe du monde, lors de la deuxième demi-finale qui se tiendra demain. S'ils gagnent, ils affronteront la puissante Argentine de Leonel Messi en finale dimanche prochain.

La campagne historique de l'équipe nationale marocaine en cours au Qatar s'appuie sur une défense qui n'a pas encore encaissé de but et des contres rapides. L'entraîneur Walid Regragui n'est à la tête de l'équipe que depuis trois mois. La recette du succès du Maroc en Coupe du Qatar comprend des tactiques défensives, de la vitesse en contre-attaque, l'habileté de son gardien et beaucoup de patience. For the first time in its history, the most popular sports event in the world will be held in in an Arab country. This year, the FIFA soccer World Cup will be held in Qatar, the Middle Eastern Emirate with one of the smallest areas in all of Asia with an estimated 11,437 km² (Ontario with its 1.076 million km² is 94 times Qatar) and, yes, it will host the World Cup from November 20 to December 18. And that's not all, for the first time a World Cup is held at the end of the year, this because of the hot climate that characterizes the country. Here are some interesting facts about Qatar, the Pearl of the Middle East. Arabic is the main and official language of Qatar. English is considered the second language in the country, and more than seven other Asian dialects and languages ​​are also spoken in Qatar. Islam is the main religion of Qatar. But as the country has many immigrants, there are other religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity.

Time in Qatar is given by Arabia Standard Time (AST) (EST +08:00). So, when it is 11 a.m. in Ottawa it is 7 p.m. in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Qatar does not currently observe daylight saving time. Just like Canada, Qatar is built by immigrants. Qatar is the third country with the highest number of immigrants in the world. About 80% of the population is from other countries, especially India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Qatari immigrants arrived in the country in the 1970s and helped build one of the richest countries in the world. 

Qatar's capital, Doha, has more than half of the country's population. Al Zubarah, founded in the 18th century, is one of the cities in Qatar famous for the pearl trade. Al Zubarah has been a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) since 2013. The city of Khawr Al Udayd, also known as the Inland Sea, is famous for being one of the only places in the world where the sea invades the desert.

Friday is a day off in Qatar and Sunday is the first day of the week. Therefore, you should plan your weekend accordingly.  Before oil and natural gas, the country’s economy was based on the pearl and fishing trade. In fact, the country has an extensive coastline, with more than 500 km. Among the most famous beaches in Qatar are: Banana Island, off the coast of the capital Doha; Al Thakhira, 60 km from Doha;  Fuwayriţ, in northern Qatar, 100 km from Doha and Zekreet, 100 km from Doha.

Qatari cuisine is famous for its rich blend of spices. Many dishes take saffron and cardamom, for example. The main dishes of Qatari cuisine are:

◦ Warak Enab — vine leaves stuffed with some kind of meat;

◦ Saloona — typical Arabic stew;

◦ Majboos — rice mixed with some meat;

◦ Madrouba — rice porridge;

◦ Luqaimat — sweet dumpling that is soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside;

◦ Kunafa — traditional Qatari dessert made with a thin dough and served with cheese.

The Qatar Museum of Islamic Art opened in 2008 and is located on an artificial island. It has the largest collection of Islamic art in the world. Considered one of the leading representatives of classical Islamic architecture, the Museum of Islamic Art of Qatar was designed by architect Leoh Ming Pei, who also designed the pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

Opened in 2010, Katara Cultural, located in Doha, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Qatar. The space encompasses several cultural performances from around the world.

The Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al Wahhab Mosque, also known as the National Mosque of Qatar, boasts one of the most impressive architecture in the Arab world.

With giant dunes that reach 40 m in height, Qatar offers several options for tours in the desert that can be done by car.

 “Qatar is also known for falconry, which is the tradition of keeping and training falcons for hunting. However, the practice no longer occurs as often in the country.

Camel racing is considered one of the most famous sports in Qatar. The main camel racing competitions take place in March and April.

"Qatar's beaches are popular for water sports such as diving, kitesurfing, water skiing and rowing.

The official FIFA World Cup 2022 ball was presented on March 30, 2022. The design was inspired by the culture, architecture, iconic boats and the flag of Qatar, host country of the 2022 World Cup. The name of the ball "Al Rihla " means "the journey" in Arabic. Sustainability was a priority in the making of the official ball for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. This is the first official ball for a World Cup created with glue and water-based paints.

La'eeb is the mascot of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar (Qatar) and was revealed last April. La'eeb is an Arabic word meaning "super-skilled player". Et ce n'est pas tout, pour la première fois une Coupe du monde est organisée en fin d'année, ceci en raison du climat chaud qui caractérise le pays.

Voici quelques faits intéressants sur le Qatar, la perle du Moyen-Orient.

L'arabe est la langue principale et officielle du Qatar. L'anglais est considéré comme la deuxième langue du pays et plus de sept autres dialectes et langues asiatiques sont également parlés au Qatar.

L'islam est la principale religion du Qatar. Mais comme le pays compte de nombreux immigrants, il existe d'autres religions, comme l'hindouisme, le bouddhisme et le christianisme.

NCCAR calls for an immediate cessation of the military escalation between Israel and the Gaza Strip and urges all parties to spare civilians all acts of mutual violence

(Ottawa, August 7, 2022): NCCAR is watching with great concern developments following the airstrikes on Gaza and rocket attacks on Israel that resulted in large numbers of civilian casualties.
This escalating tension could lead to the resumption of large-scale military confrontation and exacerbate the deterioration of the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip.
NCCAR calls on all parties to show the utmost restraint in order to avoid a new escalation that could drag the region into the scourge of wars and crises open to all possibilities.
While urgently calling on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities to end the escalation in the Middle East, our council stresses the need to contribute actively and diligently to the cessation of repeated attacks against civilians, especially women and children, and to ease the difficult human suffering in the Palestinian territories.
NCCAR emphasizes the significance of restoring calm, returning to the table of dialogue, and invoking international legitimacy to establish security and peace in the Middle East region, which is passing through the path of ending the Israeli Occupation to all Palestinian territories.
The NCCAR warns that continuation of unilateral actions and the direct targeting of civilians constitute a flagrant violation of the charters and resolutions of international legitimacy and will inevitably undermine the chances of resuming the peace process to achieve security and stability in the region.

Les affrontements ont fait des centaines de blessés et d’arrestations parmi les Palestiniens. De plus de nombreux policiers israéliens ont été blessés après avoir pris d’assaut l’enceinte de la mosquée Al-Aqsa. Cheikh Jarrah est la scéne de manifestations menées par des résidents et des militants contre les ordres donnés à de nombreuses familles palestiniennes de quitter et de céder leurs maisons à des familles de colons israéliens. Selon l’organisation des Nations Unis et les organisations de défense des droits de la personne, des centaines de Palestiniens, dont des dizaines d’enfants, sont menacés d’expulsion de leurs maisons.   

Le Conseil exhorte toutes les parties à éviter d’imposer des mesures unilatérales affectant le statut et la composition démographique de Jérusalem-Est qui aggraveraient les tensions et compromettraient une solution juste pour toutes les parties. « Tous les ordres d’évacuation forcée doivent être annulés immédiatement », a déclaré le président du CNRCA, David Comerford, qui a ajouté : « Nous appelons également tous les acteurs régionaux et internationaux à contribuer activement à la recherche d’une solution qui respecte les droits de la personne de la population palestinienne et son droit à l’autodétermination, y compris sa participation aux élections palestiniennes ».

NCCAR calls on Israel to cease all settler provocations against Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem and urges respect for the human rights of its residents 

(Ottawa, May 8, 2021): The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) is deeply concerned about the rising tensions in occupied East Jerusalem as a result of Israeli restrictions on the movement of Palestinians in and around Al Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan and the looming forced evictions of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and strongly condemns Israeli settler provocations. NCCAR also calls on all parties to exercise prudence to calm the situation and avoid slipping into further protracted violence. 

The Council is closely monitoring the unrest on the streets of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and around Al Aqsa Mosque between Palestinians and Israeli settlers and security forces. The clashes resulted in hundreds of injured and arrested Palestinians and the injury of Israeli police officers after they stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Sheikh Jarrah is witnessing protests led by residents and activists against orders to many Palestinian families to vacate and cede their homes to Israeli settler families. According to UN and human rights organizations, hundreds of Palestinians, including dozens of children, are threatened with eviction from their homes. 

The Council urges all parties to avoid imposing unilateral measures affecting the status and demographic make-up of East Jerusalem that would exacerbate tensions and undermine a just solution for all parties. "All forced evacuation orders must be called off immediately” stated NCCAR President, David Comerford, who further said: “We also call on all regional and international players to actively contribute to seeking a solution which respects the human rights of the Palestinian population and their right to self-determination, including their participation in upcoming Palestinian elections.”

(Ottawa, February 18, 2021): The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) is deeply concerned with the deterioration of the humanitarian and security conditions in Yemen. NCCAR calls on all countries, international organizations, and Canadians in particular, to assume moral responsibility for the relief of the Yemenis and to seek an immediate end to the devastating war. This urgent call coincides with many troubling reports from the United Nations declaring that Yemen is now suffering from the largest humanitarian disaster in the world.

Diseases have decimated thousands of families after months of malnutrition in an environment reeling from the guns of war,  the collapse of the health system, widespread famine and rampant corruption.. “It is a disgrace on the conscience of all humanity,” declared NCCAR President, David Comerford, “that, the spread of diseases and epidemics in addition to the Corona pandemic has further complicated the humanitarian situation in Yemen. It is well past the time to end the ongoing conflict and engage in comprehensive national reconciliation, to rebuild the country and give people back their dignity. Canadians and the whole world need to act now to save millions as mass famine and disease loom over the Yemini people!”

The reports of four United Nations agencies issued recently confirmed that nearly 2.3 million children under five in Yemen will suffer from acute malnutrition in 2021, and 400 thousand of them are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition. Many, if not most of them will die if they do not receive treatment urgently. Around 1.2 million pregnant or breastfeeding women in Yemen are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2021.

In Yemen, which imports 90% of its food, approximately 50,000 people are currently starving to death while another 5 million are one step away from starvation. More than two-thirds of Yemen's population requires humanitarian aid, including more than 3.6 million people displaced by the war.  With nearly 50% of health facilities not functioning, the Yemeni people will experience severe hardship in the coming months as war, disease and the COVID-19 pandemic ravage the country.

According to statistics from the Office of the High Commissioner of the United Nations, the war has killed at least 7,825 civilians, including 2,138 children and 933 women while more than 12,000 people have been injured. Meanwhile, the country's vital infrastructure, including transportation, health, education, water, and communications has been severely damaged. The conflict has impeded physical and economic access to food with up to 16.2 million people expected to be affected in the first half of 2021.

NCCAR believes that all efforts need to be taken immediately to avoid the worsening of the human catastrophe in Yemen and calls on all the belligerents in the conflict to lay down their arms and to channel all possible resources into the humanitarian effort.

CNRCA appelle les Canadiens à apporter une aide urgente à la population Yéménite faisant face à la plus grande catastrophe humanitaire du monde

(Ottawa, le 18 février 2021) : Le Conseil national des relations canada-arabes (CNRCA) est profondément préoccupé par la détérioration des conditions humanitaires et de sécurité au Yémen. Le CNRCA appelle tous les pays, organisations internationales et Canadiens en particulier, à assumer la responsabilité morale du secours des Yéménites et à chercher à mettre    fin immédiatement à la guerre dévastatrice. Cet appel urgent coïncide avec   de nombreux rapports   troublants de l’ONU déclarant que le Yémen souffre maintenant de la plus grande catastrophe humanitaire au monde. 

Les maladies ont décimé des milliers de familles après des mois de malnutrition dans un environnement ébranlé par les armes de la guerre, l'effondrement du système de santé, la famine généralisée et la corruption endémique. « C’est une honte pour la conscience de toute l’humanité », a déclaré le président du CNRCA, David Comerford, « que la propagation de maladies et d'épidémies en plus de la pandémie du Coronavirus a encore compliqué la situation humanitaire au Yémen. Il est bien plus que temps de mettre fin au conflit en cours et de s'engager dans une réconciliation nationale globale, de reconstruire le pays et de redonner aux gens leur dignité. Les Canadiens et le monde entier doivent agir maintenant pour sauver des millions de personnes alors que la famine et la maladie de masse planent sur le peuple Yéménite. 

Les rapports de quatre agences des Nations Unies récemment publiés ont confirmé que près de 2,3 millions d'enfants de moins de cinq ans souffriront de malnutrition aiguë en 2021 au Yémen, et que 400 000 d'entre eux souffriront de malnutrition aiguë sévère. Beaucoup d'entre eux, sinon la plupart, mourront s'ils ne reçoivent pas de traitement d'urgence. Environ 1,2 million de femmes enceintes ou allaitantes au Yémen devraient souffrir de malnutrition aiguë en 2021.

National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia (Ottawa, 1 February 2021)

The National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) welcomes favorably the announcement of the Government of Canada’s intention to make January 29th a National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia, to honour the victims and express solidarity with the survivors of this tragedy.

“All Canadians should reflect on this tragic event, engage with the diverse communities that make up our country and seek to breakdown the negative stereotypes that can lead to racism and extreme acts”, said David Comerford, president of NCCAR in a statement released on Monday.

The announcement comes on the fourth anniversary of the tragic events in which six Canadians of Muslim faith lost their lives. Our thoughts and prayers go to the families and loved ones of Kahled Belkacemi, Ibrahima Barry, Azzedine soufiane, Mamdou Tannou Barry, Aboubaker Thabti et Abdelkrim Hassane. They will never be forgotten.

On this occasion, the NCCAR joins the Quebec communities and the Canadian population to remember those events and to gratefully recognize the importance of the announcement in such a time where solidarity is most needed.

It joins its voice to the multiple calls and to the continuous efforts to fight Islamophobia and any form of discrimination and to continue to build a stronger and more inclusive Canada.

Le Conseil national des relations canado-arabes (CNRCA) accueille favorablement l'annonce de l'intention du gouvernement;intention du gouvernement du Canada de faire du 29 janvier une Journée nationale de commémoration de l’attentat à la mosquée de Québec et d'action contre l'islamophobie, pour honorer les victimes et exprimer sa solidarité avec les survivants de cette tragédie.

« Tous les Canadiens devraient réfléchir à cet événement tragique, s'engager avec les diverses communautés

qui composent notre pays et chercher à briser les stéréotypes négatifs qui peuvent mener au racisme et à des

actes extrêmes », a déclaré David Comerford, président de CNRCA dans un communiqué publié lundi.

L'annonce survient alors que on célèbre le quatrième anniversaire des événements tragiques au cours desquels six Canadiens de religion musulmane ont perdu la vie. Nos pensées et nos prières vont aux familles et aux proches de Kahled Belkacemi, Ibrahima Barry, Azzedine soufiane, Mamdou Tannou Barry, Aboubaker Thabti et Abdelkrim Hassane. Ils ne seront jamais oubliés.

À cette occasion, le NCCAR se joint aux communautés québécoises et à la population canadienne pour se

souvenir de ces événements et reconnaître avec gratitude l'importance de l'annonce dans un moment où la

solidarité est des plus nécessaires.

Le conseil joint sa voix aux multiples appels et aux efforts continus pour lutter contre;islamophobie et contre

toute forme de discrimination et pour continuer à bâtir un Canada plus fort et plus inclusif.

NCCAR Concerned About Unrest in Tunisia and Urges Long-awaited Economic Reform (Ottawa, January 29, 2021):

The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) is concerned with recent political tensions and popular protests in Tunisia amid a dangerous security escalation and deteriorating living conditions for Tunisians. In the current environment, NCCAR also condemns the acts of rampage and vandalism that do not help the country face an already complex economic crisis.

While NCCAR wishes success to the government headed by Mr. Hisham El-Mechishi, we urge the Tunisian government to respect freedom of expression and to implement administrative and economic reforms to strengthen the democratic process. The Council also calls on various popular parties and civil society organizations to show restraint and not to be drawn into calls for escalation or militarization of society.

Unfortunately, since mid-January, several regions in Tunisia have been witnessing nightly protests, interspersed with clashes with security forces, coinciding with the entry into force of a night curfew as part of measures to combat the Corona epidemic. “It is regrettable” stated NCCAR President, David Comerford, “that, several protesters have been killed and hundreds put behind bars for expressing their views on the tenth anniversary of Tunisia’s 2011 uprising, which inspired the "Arab Spring" and launched a democratic transition in the country.”

Political paralysis and an unprecedented economic crisis have led to an escalation of protests in many depressed areas of Tunisia. Perceived inequality and police abuses are also exacerbating the anger of many young Tunisians who are suffering from severe unemployment reaching over 30% Last year. Tunisia's economy contracted by more than 8% and the fiscal deficit rose above 12% of GDP, while public debt swelled to more than 90% of GDP.

Tunisia is a strategic country in the Arab world and in the international arena where its stability and transition to democracy contribute to the consolidation of peace and prosperity in the MENA region and the world. NCCAR is confident that Tunisia will finally witness the desired transition towards full democracy and the well-being of life and equality for all its citizens.

Le NCCAR s'inquiète des troubles en Tunisie et appelle à une réforme économique tant attendue (Ottawa, 29 janvier 2021):
Le Conseil national des relations canado-arabes (CNRCA) est préoccupé par les récentes tensions politiques et les manifestations populaires en Tunisie dans un contexte d’escalade sécuritaire dangereuse et de détérioration des conditions de vie des Tunisiens. Dans le contexte actuel, le CNRCA condamne également les actes de saccage et de vandalisme qui n'aident pas le pays à faire face à une crise économique déjà complexe.

Alors que le CNRCA souhaite plein succès au gouvernement dirigé par M. Hisham El-Mechichi, nous exhortons

le gouvernement tunisien à respecter la liberté d'expression et à mettre en œuvre des réformes administratives et économiques pour renforcer le processus démocratique. Le Conseil appelle également les divers partis populaires et organismes de la société civile à faire preuve de retenue et à ne pas se laisser entraîner dans des appels à l'escalade ou à la militarisation de la société.

Malheureusement, depuis la mi-janvier, plusieurs régions de Tunisie ont été témoins de manifestations nocturnes, entrecoupées d'affrontements avec les forces de l’ordre, coïncidant avec l'entrée en vigueur d'un couvre-feu nocturne dans le cadre des mesures de lutte contre la pandémie du virus du Corona. « Il est regrettable » a déclaré le président du CNRCA, David Comerford, « que plusieurs manifestants aient été tués et des centaines mis derrière les barreaux pour avoir exprimé leur point de vue au dixième anniversaire du soulèvement de 2011 en Tunisie, qui a inspiré le« printemps arabe » et lancé une transition démocratique au pays. »

L’impasse politique et une crise économique sans précédent ont conduit à une escalade des manifestations dans de nombreuses régions en déclin économique de la Tunisie. Les inégalités perçues et les abus de la police exacerbent également la colère de nombreux jeunes Tunisiens qui souffrent d'un chômage sévère de plus de 30% l'année dernière. L'économie tunisienne s'est contractée de plus de 8% et le déficit budgétaire a dépassé 12% du PIB, tandis que la dette publique a gonflé à plus de 90% du PIB.

La Tunisie est un pays stratégique dans le monde arabe et sur la scène internationale où sa stabilité et sa transition vers la démocratie contribuent à la consolidation de la paix et de la prospérité dans la région MENA et dans le monde. Le CNRCA est convaincu que la Tunisie assistera enfin à la transition souhaitée vers la pleine démocratie et le bien-être de la vie et l'égalité pour tous ses citoyens.

In wake of the tragic explosion in Beirut, the National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) wishes to express its gratitude to the Canadian government for its rapid response to send five million dollars in humanitarian assistance to the people of Lebanon.

This assistance would bring badly needed medical supplies, food and temporary shelters.

As proud Canadians, the Board of NCCAR is happy to see the Canadian values of compassion and solidarity prevail once again to lend a helping hand to the people of Lebanon.
